In Others’ Words

A practice can describe itself; it is better described by others. Collected here are the letters and citations written about Jean-mic Perrine and Architects Perrine across three decades — by the Institute, by the Parliament, by the City, by the academy, and by the juries of the profession’s own awards.

Each letter is reproduced in full from the original held in the practice archive. Nothing is paraphrased; dates, titles and letterheads are as written.

The correspondents: Warren Kerr FRAIA, WA Chapter President and National President-Elect of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects; John Hyde MLA, Member for Perth; Lisa Scaffidi, Councillor of the City of Perth; Peter Monks, Director of Planning and Development, City of Perth 1999–2012; and Patrick Beale, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts at the University of Western Australia.

Warren Kerr FRAIA

On behalf of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, it is my pleasure to provide this letter of introduction to attest to the standing and credentials of Jean-Mic Perrine of Perrine Architecture.

Jean-Mic is highly regarded as a senior practitioner of the architectural profession in Western Australia. As a registered architect with the Architects Board of Western Australia, he has completed an enviable track record of projects in a range of fields including single and multi-residential, retail, commercial, worship and liturgical spaces.

During his career, the buildings for which he has been responsible have won a number of Awards including the Master Builders Association Building of the Year and RAIA commercial Awards.

Although based in Perth, Jean-Mic has undertaken a range of successful projects in Western Australia, other States of Australia and overseas.

I therefore have no hesitation in recommending his credentials as an architect to potential clients.

Lisa Scaffidi

I have known Mr Jean-mic Perrine professionally, for over 4 years, in my role as a Perth City Councillor.

I believe Mr Jean-mic Perrine’s work is very visionary and yet extremely functional. Jean-mic is able to view a project in its entirety by realizing the (often equal) importance of the surrounding precinct(s), and the significance of the adjoining streetscape in relation to overall scale and context.

Jean-mic is a person of high integrity and a man who values good family and social principles. He is a good listener and observant of the ideals of others. I also know Jean-mic is very passionate about our lovely city of Perth.

As a very well-respected Architect and Property-Developer in the Western Australian community I would have no hesitation in recommending him to a group or consortium as a true-professional who ‘can deliver’, and one who will also deliver with all the appropriate attention to detail required on a major public project with many, varied stakeholders.

I write in support of the contribution to local architecture by my constituent Jean-mic Perrine.

During my tenure as a Councillor, Mayor and now State Member for Perth, I have been impressed by Mr Perrine’s exciting, professional and sympathetic contribution to our city’s streetscape.

His precise and impressive work on the former Leederville Post Office ensured not only that the community was able to keep and visualise an important cultural link with our past, but also we were given functional buildings that can serve a modern community and retail uses.

Jean-mic Perrine is the recipient of a number of civic awards, including the Town of Cambridge award for Heritage Projects, the Colonnade Retail Centre (City of Subiaco Civic design award 1996), (MBA CCA 1996 Construction Industry Excellence Awards, Joint winner with the North West Shelf Project); Box Building in the Perth CBD; Next Building (cnr Hay and Milligan) Perth CBD.

The Box building in particular has breathed new life into a previously sterile section of the CBD — as I can view it from my Parliament House office I personally approve of its creative impact on my skyline!

Peter Monks

I am happy to provide a professional and personal reference for Jean-mic Perrine. I have had dealings with Jean-mic over many years in my roles working at the City of Fremantle during the period from 1987–1994 and as Director Planning and Development at the City of Perth during the period 1999–2012.

Jean-Mic has always produced high quality design outcomes for his projects, focused on improving the quality of the urban environment and contributing to the public realm through strong streetscape and public domain presentations. Jean-mic produces contemporary designs appropriate to their settings and within a context that understands sustainability and affordable housing.

Jean-mic is a good communicator, can explain the rationale for a position very clearly and in a calm and professional manner that is well regarded by colleagues, which makes his contribution more meaningful.

I consider that Jean-mic would be an invaluable member of any Design Advisory Committee.

I have known Jean-mic du Buisson Perrine by reputation and professionally since I arrived in Western Australia in 1995 to take up an academic position at the School of Architecture Landscape and Fine Arts at UWA. I have understood Jean-mic’s reputation to be that of an innovative design professional with a particular understanding of the economics of architecture both in production and in lifecycle value.

He is a practitioner who has executed his most significant projects within and close to the Perth CBD, many of which most citizens will be familiar with — the Cinema Paradiso complex in Northbridge (RAIA Commercial Award 1993), the Colonnade Hay mixed use complex at 388 Hay Street Subiaco (1994/5 Subiaco Centenary Award for Built Form), and the Leederville GPO heritage redevelopment complex (RAIA Heritage Award 2004 and Town of Vincent Heritage Award) are among the most notable.

The innovative BOX building redevelopment at 918 Hay Street launched the high quality high density re-invigoration of the Perth City Precinct in 2001 (City of Perth Inaugural Heritage Award), demonstrating that heritage values and modern design and development were not only compatible, but highly complementary. In 2007, the Sunday Times nominated Jean-mic as one of the 50 most influential West Australians.

Jean-mic is also responsible for developing and patenting systems of sustainable modular building forms using a low carbon reinforced concrete based on fly ash aggregates, a material and system used internationally and primed for future use in the ongoing development of Perth.

In 2000 I was appointed Dean of the new Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Visual Arts at UWA, and took over the teaching of a new Professional Practice stream in the School. Jean-mic has participated in this program in various capacities since then as a guest lecturer, panel member in Q&A type sessions, and as a practice mentor to small groups of students. His participation and contributions to this program have been invaluable and deeply appreciated by our students as well as by me and my colleagues.

He is a consummate professional, who talks and thinks honestly and clearly about Architecture, the city, and the issues that we face in the ongoing project that is the greater city of Perth and its suburbs. This is a rare and valuable attribute.

I believe that Jean-mic would be an excellent candidate for the Chair of the Town of Cambridge Design Review Panel. His expertise and highly developed critical awareness of design and development issues would be an asset to the panel. I recommend him to you most highly.
